See what Top Notch had to say about why The Hagerman Group was chosen as this year’s 2012 Contractor of the Year:

The Top Notch Contractor of the Year category was a tough race this year.  The category had many strong applicants and the jury spent a great deal of time discussing the elements of each application.  As an industry, we are extremely fortunate to have so many strong contractors with a history of safety and quality.   The finalists for this category include:  DA Dodd, ERMCO Electric, Hagerman Group and Pepper Construction.

This year, the jury selected a contractor whose application told the story about a “re-engineering of their firm.”  The application described a company mission focused on the cultivation of key components – including Talent, Knowledge, Client Focus and Corporate Citizenship.  One of our jury members called the process “ an internal cultural and educational shift” and indicated they have felt the shift on jobsites first hand.

The winning applicant truly fosters an educational spirit within its ranks.  The applicant detailed their “Leadership Bootcamp” program which establishes a mentor protégée relationship within company employees.  Their application told the story of an investment in raising all of their employees up a notch.  The winning applicant boasted 9 key employees currently working on their MBA degree.

As a general contractor, the winning applicant recognized the vital importance of its relationship with its subcontractors.  The application reflected a commitment to fostering stronger relationships with subcontractors and forging partnerships that truly result in a higher quality of work.

In addition, the winning applicant outlined a formal commitment to ensuring they leave behind an investment in each community in which they work. From a commitment to hiring local subcontractors to community investment donations, the winning applicant recognized a need to invest local construction dollars into the communities in which they came from.

This commitment can be found in their development of bid packages that best reflect the capabilities of local subcontractors, as well as their corporate community donations.

Lastly, the jury noted the contractor’s commitment to continuous improvement.  The applicant has established a formal dialogue with owners inquiring how to meet their construction needs, including owner surveys and follow up meetings.  The jury felt the commitment to job site specific needs before a bid was submitted was worthy of recognition.

  

The winning applicant also demonstrated a clear commitment to corporate citizenship.  All employee job descriptions include an element of community and industry volunteerism.  In addition, the winning applicant has a strong history of commitment to organizations focused on economic development within the region.  As one jury member indicated, this is a “strong Indiana firm that invests in Indiana.”

The 2012 Top Notch Contractor of the Year Award goes to …….THE HAGERMAN GROUP.

The 'Greatest Spectacle' Returns

You can smell the exhaust fumes in the air, hear the screaming of the engines as they pass, and spot the mullets from afar.  It’s May in Indiana and that can only mean one thing: “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing”, the Indianapolis 500, has returned yet again.  After going through some rough patches in the past decade, the Indianapolis 500 mile race is certainly regaining its historic panache, and continues to attract attention from all corners of the globe.

There is extra buzz around this year’s race due to several factors.  First and foremost, who can forget the amazing conclusion to last year’s 500, which saw race-leader (and rookie) JR Hildebrand hit the wall in the final turn of the race, surrendering the lead to eventual winner Dan Wheldon.  Everyone will be watching next weekend to see if this year’s race will be similarly determined.  Next, the entire month has and will be a celebration of Wheldon’s life, as he sadly passed away in an event last October.  As the reining Indy 500 champ, his image is printed on all of this year’s tickets, and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway has several other tributes to him planned throughout the race weekend.  Finally, there is an element of unknown with this year’s race, as the cars for this season include new chassis, engines, and aerodynamics packages.  Add several rookie drivers and limited testing to the mix and you’ve got the ingredients to an action-packed race for which the trophy is anybody’s to grab.                

As an Indianapolis native born and raised, the Indy 500 holds a special significance to me.  While others may not typically be interested in auto racing, I would be willing to bet that anyone, fan or not, who experienced the month of May in Indy would be instantly hooked.  The hallowed grounds of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway have a way of doing that people.  The sights, the sounds, the history, the food, the sunburns…what’s not to love?

New Wishard Takes Center Stage at Greening the Heartland Event

The ninth Annual Greening the Heartland Conference wraps up today in Indianapolis by highlighting The New Wishard Hospital project. Conference organizers say it is the largest Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design initiative under construction in the city. Representatives with Wishard-Eskenazi Healthcare will discuss the effort to secure LEED designations.

News Release

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (May 18th, 2012) - Day 3, and final day, for The 9th Annual 'Greening the Heartland' Conference here in Indy brings to center stage The New Wishard Hospital project. This is the largest LEED documentation project currently being constructed in Indianapolis. Registered as a LEED campus project the multiple building site is just midway along its path to LEED Silver certification. Final documentation completion is anticipated in 2014.

Here today to speak on the how's and why's of this immense undertaking are representatives from Wishard-Eskenazi Healthcare. Dr. Lisa E. Harris, CEO and Medical Director for Wishard Health Services and Matthew R. Gutwein, CEO of Health and Hospital Corporation of Marion County will offer an insider's look at what it takes to go LEED on a large scale. Moderating the presentation will be Heather Zeto, CEO of Platinum Earth LLC Sustainability and LEED Consulting, USGBC-Indiana Vice Chair -2012., and a member of the LEED consulting team for the New Wishard Hospital. The presentation is scheduled for today in Exhibit Hall A beginning at 11:00 am.

Strategies II News

At the March Employee Recognition event, the Mindset Team presented the Strategies II marketing brochure that defined the direction for the various Strategy Teams.  Included in the brochure was a letter from Leadership supporting increased participation. Embedded in the roll out of this brochure were specific change principles that Mindset Team was testing.  The success of change principles was measured by the growth in the membership of the Teams.  As of the April 16^th sign up deadline, 58% of all employees were participating in Strategies II, representing an increase of 19%.  The lessons the Mindset Team learned regarding change principles will be applied by other Teams in order to achieve similar benefits.

A forthcoming campaign is being launched by the Subcontractor Relationship Team.  In consideration that 85% of our project success depends on the performance of subs, we want to continue to improve our relationships with our subcontractors.  As a result, the goal of this campaign is to identify more “Power” subs with whom we need to further develop our relationship.

The Lean Team and Hagerman Institute are working together on the roll out of the new Quality Management Program.  Another forthcoming initiative of the Lean Team is a 2-day training opportunity to be conducted by WCM Associates.   A Lean Last Planner scheduling meeting took place on May 14 for the IUPUI Neurosciences Research project.  Hagerman is one of five prime contractors for this new job.

Lean Planning Meeting - 5/14

On May 3, the Client Focus Team and its Young Development Group conducted an informative seminar on Construction Financing led by Chase Bank and financial consultants Umbaugh.  The Client Focus team is also working with the Business Development Department supporting a new Business Development Program.

The Volunteer-Community Involvement Team has been active in both Ft. Wayne and Indianapolis.  In Ft. Wayne, this Team assisted Fort Wayne Community Schools with their referendum.  The Referendum was successful and this project represents $119 million of project opportunity for Hagerman.  Additionally, on April 28 Rebuilding Together was held in Indianapolis.  Hagerman has been involved with this community organization since the Indianapolis charter was formed, and this year two homes were removed through the effort of Hagerman employees.

A new community participation event called Canstruction will be announced in the near future.  The event will consist of a competition at the State Fair Groups where Contractor-Architect-Engineer teams build sculptures of cans of food.  For this event we are collaborating with Ratio Architects and C.E. Solutions; the employees of each firm will raise money for the cans of food that will then be donated to Gleaner’s Food Bank following the competition.

On a related initiative, congratulations to  Leigh Ann Leazier,  Tony Suter, and Glenn Gmitter for their success in the Ft. Wayne annual Earth Day competition.  This program, sponsored by THG Sustainability Department, included a photo scavenger hunt of “green” objects and activities.

Welcome Summer Interns!

The Hagerman Group is proud to maintain its strong internship program with the addition of three student interns for the upcoming summer session.  The interns will be working on a variety of tasks and projects within the organization.  A warm Hagerman Group welcome to the following students:

Michael Ryan is entering his second summer of working for The Hagerman Group.  He previously interned in our Fort Wayne office, assisting in the yard operations and also in the estimating department.  This summer he will be working closely with the project manager and project engineer on the IU Neuroscience Research Building in downtown Indianapolis.  Hailing from Kansas City, MO, Michael is a junior in the Construction Engineering & Management program at Purdue University. 

Andrew Turner is joining The Hagerman Group for the first time this summer.  He will be splitting his time between two Hagerman projects during his time with us: the Euler Science Building at Taylor University in Upland, IN, and the Ball Memorial Hospital Renovations in Muncie, IN.  Originally from Fort Wayne, IN, Andrew is a senior in the Building Construction Management program at Ball State University.

Steven Brisley is also joining THG for the first time this summer.  He will be working on several initiatives on the marketing side of the organization in the coming months, including the project database, social media campaign, and The Hagerman Institute, among others.  Steven, who is a junior and a triple-major (Economic Consulting, Technology Management, and International Business) at Indiana University, will be based out of our Fishers office for the summer.
